Project Overview — Krono Machine
Krono Machine is a mechanic-driven puzzle level built around freezing objects in place and storing energy inside them through additional shots. When the object is released, that stored energy affects how it behaves, allowing the same core mechanic to be applied in several different ways throughout the level.
The level was structured using IPM pacing, with each major room introducing a new application of the mechanic while increasing the amount of understanding required from the player. Short camera cinematics were also used throughout the level to direct attention toward important interactive elements before the player was asked to solve each challenge.

Before building the level, I planned the sequence of rooms around the gradual introduction and escalation of the stored-energy mechanic. Bubble diagrams and IPM pacing were used to establish the order of challenges, transitions between high- and low-intensity moments, and where new mechanical concepts would be introduced.
Each room was designed to build on the player's previous understanding rather than introducing an unrelated puzzle, allowing the level to increase complexity while maintaining a consistent mechanical foundation.
Room One — Counterweight Elevators
The first room introduces the stored-energy mechanic through a pair of counterweight elevators. The player learns how freezing an object and storing energy within it can be used to manipulate movement and change the state of the environment.
The challenge was intentionally kept relatively controlled so the player could focus on understanding the relationship between freezing, stored energy, and movement before those concepts were combined with additional hazards later in the level.

Room Two — Rotating Laser Hazard
The second room introduces an active hazard by placing the player against rotating laser obstacles. Rather than simply manipulating traversal objects, the player must recognize that the same freezing mechanic can be applied to the central mechanism controlling the lasers, temporarily halting their rotation and creating a safe opportunity to move through the space.
This room builds on the first challenge by asking the player to apply an established mechanic in a new context while also considering timing and environmental danger.

Room Three — Stored-Energy Platforms
The final room expands the stored-energy system into player-controlled traversal. Floating platforms travel a greater distance depending on how much energy the player stores within them, requiring the player to judge how much force is necessary to reach the next destination.
A short camera transition highlights the platform system when the player enters the room, directing attention toward the new interaction.
This challenge serves as the culmination of the level’s mechanical progression by taking the freezing and energy-storage concepts introduced earlier and giving the player greater control over their outcome.
